Today’s Thought
Every healthy marriage begins when two people choose to die to themselves so that God can grow something beautiful together.
Scripture
John 12:24 – “Very truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.”
Devotion
Every magnificent tree begins as a tiny seed. Before anyone sees a strong trunk, spreading branches, or beautiful fruit, the seed must first be planted in the ground. The gardener digs a hole, places the seed into the soil, and covers it. For weeks it appears as though nothing is happening.
Yet beneath the surface, life has already begun.
Marriage starts in much the same way
When two people stand before God and promise to spend their lives together, they begin a brand new journey. God plants two lives side by side. He never intended for one person to lose their identity or become a copy of the other. Instead, He designed marriage so that two unique people could grow together while still reflecting their individual gifts and personalities that He has given each of them.
However, just as a seed must die before it can grow, every marriage requires two people who are willing to surrender their selfishness.
This is one of the greatest challenges in marriage.
Our natural desires are to protect ourselves, insist on our own way, and our own needs. But Jesus teaches us that life begins when we choose to lay down our lives.
Every act of forgiveness, every kind word, and every sacrifice made in love is a seed. Every time you choose your spouse over your own comfort, another seed is planted. Keep planting seeds of love. In time, they will produce a harvest far greater than you can imagine.
Many couples become discouraged because they can not immediately see the results of their efforts. But growth always begins underground.
God is working in your marriage even when you can not yet see the fruit. Trust Him.
Question to think and talk about
What is one area where each of us needs to become less selfish so that our marriage can become stronger?
Challenge
Today, intentionally do one unselfish act of kindness for your spouse without expecting anything in return. Let your love be shown through your actions.
Pray together
Heavenly Father, thank you for bringing us together and for choosing us to walk through life as husband and wife. Teach us to let go of selfishness and pride. Help us to love one another the way Jesus loves us. Plant Your Word deep within our hearts and grow our marriage into something that brings glory to You.
May every sacrifice we make for one another become a seed that produces lasting fruit. Amen
