Psalm 23:2 – Is your marriage a place of peace and safety?

Psalm 23:2 – “He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters.”

Psalm 23 paints a striking picture of God’s loving care for His people, with David comparing God to a shepherd. Sheep are completely dependent on their shepherd. Without the shepherd’s guidance, they are vulnerable to getting lost, injured, attacked by predators, and could even face death. Under the shepherd’s care, they find guidance, nourishment, and protection.

Verse 2 focuses on the aspects of peace and safety – the shepherd creates an environment where the sheep can rest without fear. This image offers important lessons for marriage. In a world filled with anxiety, busyness, conflict, and uncertainty, Christian couples are called to create a home where they can experience the peace and refreshment of God together and find rest for their souls.

            Prioritising rest in marriage

The verse starts with, “He makes me lie down…” It implies a command and active choice to rest. Sometimes God’s greatest gift is not more activity but rest.

You likely often find yourselves living at an exhausting pace. Between juggling your careers, family, children, finances, home, community responsibilities, ministry, and endless commitments, there is often little time to nurture your relationship. When this happens, emotional and spiritual burnout follow, and intimacy dwindles.

God knows how important it is for us to rest, in life and in marriage. Rest is built into His creation. But it won’t happen if you don’t prioritise it. You need to set aside time to pause, reconnect, and enjoy each other’s company.

            Nurturing one another’s souls

“Green pastures” represent nourishment and provision. God supplies everything His sheep need to not only survive but also to flourish.

In marriage, you are called to support one another emotionally, spiritually, and relationally. While only God can fully satisfy the human heart, you have a responsibility as spouses to encourage and strengthen each other, bringing out the best in one another so that each of you can fulfil the role God intended for you.

            Providing emotional safety

Sheep only lie down when they feel completely safe. Similarly, people are generally only at ease to open their hearts when they know they won’t be rejected, ridiculed, or attacked.

One of the greatest gifts you can give each other is emotional safety. Emotional safety means both of you are confident that you have the space to be vulnerable, honest, and authentic. You feel that you have the freedom to share your fears, dreams, failures, and struggles without fear of judgment. It means you both feel heard, respected, and valued, whatever your emotional state.

At its heart, marriage should be the one true sanctuary where you can completely drop your guard.

            Creating a haven of peace

The shepherd leads his sheep beside still waters. Sheep feel safe when the water is calm and accessible. Rushing waters frighten them and make them act impulsively, consequently putting themselves in danger.

Likewise, your marriage should be a place where peace prevails over chaos. Many homes today are filled with noise, pressure, criticism, and tension. Over time, this creates emotional exhaustion and a breakdown in trust. God calls us to intentionally cultivate an atmosphere of peace through kindness, forgiveness, and understanding.

This doesn’t mean you will never disagree, or that you are not allowed to disagree. Rather, it means that you will learn to handle disagreements with gentleness, patience, and respect.

When your marriage and home are a place of peace, you will both be able to face life’s challenges with confidence, because you have a safe place to return to.

            Trusting the good shepherd together

Despite these godly roles and responsibilities of being a spouse, it is vital to remember that God is ultimately the shepherd of marriage. Many couples place unrealistic expectations on one another, expecting their spouse to meet their every need, solve every problem, and provide complete happiness, That role belongs to God alone.

The strongest marriages are those where both of you trust the good shepherd as your ultimate provider and caretaker.

When Christ is at the centre of your marriage, your relationship and home will become a place of green pastures, quiet waters, and lasting refreshment.

Questions to think and talk about:

            1. In what ways can your marriage become a “green pasture” for both of you?
            2.  What are some signs that your marriage has become too busy and needs intentional rest?
            3. What practical steps can you take to prioritise quality time together?
            4. Why is rest, both physically and spiritually, important for a healthy marriage?
